IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT THE CENTRE’S 2010-11 GRANTS AND AWARDS

The inaugural contract among the Provincial Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health (the Centre), the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) comes to an end in March 2010. While the Centre will enter into a new contract with MCYS in 2010-11, we are currently unable to commit to funding new projects in the next fiscal year. As a result, research grants and training awards have been temporarily suspended while the Centre and MCYS work together to renew the Centre’s mandate and identify ways to build on our significant accomplishments.

Current award recipients are not affected by this funding interruption, and should continue to carry out their grant-related activities. Read more...

The Research Grants competition is now closed for 2008-2009.

Purpose

Research calls for proposals encourage and support research of direct relevance to child and youth (0-18 years of age) mental health. All types of research relating to child and youth (0-18 years of age) mental health are eligible for funding (biomedical, clinical health systems and services, population and public health, program evaluation).

These funds will not duplicate other major funding available; rather they will provide opportunities to increase capacity where other opportunities do not exist. Normally, funds will not be used to offset budget shortfalls.

Value of the Award

Maximum of $75,000 a year for up to 2 years. This will be contingent on the availability of funds and the Centre’s contract renewal beyond March 31, 2010.

Budget is not to exceed $75,000 in any budget year.

Award Conditions

1. Priority Areas

The Centre funds high quality, applied research of "significant and direct" relevance to child and youth mental health in Ontario. We are primarily interested in funding outcomes-based research and research that will produce scientifically sound evidence-based practice.

Areas of special interest for the Research Grants competition include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Integration of child and youth mental health (within and between sectors);
  • SSystematic reviews;
  • Youth engagement in child and youth mental health (promotion, prevention, advocacy, policy development);
  • Uptake of evidence-based practice and
  • Child and youth mental health care indicators and outcome measurementUptake of evidence-based practice in an applied setting;
  • Cross-sectoral collaboration in the provision of child and youth mental health services.

The most competitive proposals are those with: unquestionable direct relevance to child and youth mental health in Ontario; a clear and focused research question that fills a knowledge gap; strong scientific methodology; and a research team that is methodologically sophisticated and complemented by a truly collaborative community-university (and/or academic health centre) partnership.

Purely descriptive studies will not be funded.

2. Collaborative Partnerships

Collaborative partnerships must be established between university-based agencies (i.e., academic) and community-based agencies in order for proposals to be reviewed and considered for funding. Through such partnerships, the Centre aims to build research capacity in the community and to foster knowledge transfer and exchange across sectors. Both co-principal applicants must be involved in the formulation of the research question and the project design. Please note the following definitions for clarification:

University-based Organizations
Accredited universities or academic health science centres with linkage to and support from an accredited university in the province of Ontario (i.e., universities, teaching hospitals, research institutes).

Community-based Organizations
Organizations located within the community that are not otherwise formally linked financially or administratively to academic-based organizations (i.e., community agencies, child and youth mental health centres, community-based organizations and associations, school boards). Academic health science centres do not fit under this umbrella.

Co-Principal Applicant/ Investigator
The principal investigator or lead researcher on a research proposal, application, agreement, contract or award is the one responsible for the conceptualization and implementation of the research project. The Centre requires that leadership on its research grants be shared between two Co-Principal Applicants/Investigators. Each Co-Principal Applicant/Investigator has equal status on the project.  The grant must be housed within the home-based organization of one of the two Co-Principal Applicants/Investigators. Co-Principal Applicants/Investigators are not remunerated in any fashion on the research grant.

Applicant/Investigator/Collaborator
Any research grant can have as many applicants (or co-applicants), investigators or collaborators as deemed necessary to strengthen the research team and to facilitate the successful undertaking of the proposed research. They may represent content experts, methodologists, key stakeholders or others who add significantly to the project. Applicants/Investigators/Collaborators are not remunerated in any fashion on the research grant. Paid consultants are not included in this definition, but may be included on a grant.

Note 1: Where an individual applicant has dual affiliations (e.g., appointment at a university with consultation in a community-based agency), the primary appointment takes precedence.

Note 2: You may want to read “Doing More in Partnership” – a toolkit that provides useful information on successful community-university partnerships.

3. Proposal Re-submissions

The Centre will accept previously reviewed proposals in suitable format for Phase 1 (Letter of Intent). Please note that reviewer comments and suggestions should be taken into consideration when re-submitting proposals. Re-submissions are reviewed in the same way as other applications.

Re-resubmitted proposals must adhere to any changes in the Research Grant competition, including new areas of focus and timelines.

4. Eligible budget costs

Eligible budget costs for grant applications include:

  • direct labor costs (salaries and benefits; not including Co-Principal Applicants);
  • travel expenses associated with data collection;
  • required materials;
  • general and administrative costs and;
  • minor equipment costs (i.e., software) for tools required to accomplish activities funded by the grant (the purchase of computers will not normally be considered as an eligible budget cost).

Major capital costs, such as those associated with buildings, equipment, furniture and facilities are not allowable costs for the purposes of these grant funds.
