IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT THE CENTRE’S 2010-11 GRANTS AND AWARDS

The inaugural contract among the Provincial Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health (the Centre), the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) comes to an end in March 2010. While the Centre will enter into a new contract with MCYS in 2010-11, we are currently unable to commit to funding new projects in the next fiscal year. As a result, research grants and training awards have been temporarily suspended while the Centre and MCYS work together to renew the Centre’s mandate and identify ways to build on our significant accomplishments.

Current award recipients are not affected by this funding interruption, and should continue to carry out their grant-related activities. Read more...

The Community Mobilization Awards competition is now closed for 2008-2009.

Purpose

Community Mobilization Awards aim to support a motivated group of community service providers, organizations and stakeholders collaborate to address a pressing local issue directly relevant to child and youth mental health in the province of Ontario. Cross-disciplinary and/or cross-sectoral participation are a requirement of this award.

A limited number of awards will be available providing funds that are intended to assist with the costs of bringing people together to discuss a community issue, develop a community action plan to address that issue and implement and evaluate the actions identified within the plan. Applicants are responsible for clearly defining the “community” that has mobilized to collectively develop and implement the action plan. Communities can be defined geographically, culturally or through a common interest in the community issue being addressed.

Community Mobilization Awards run for one full calendar year and are divided into two phases.

  • In Phase 1 (months 0 to 6), project partners will develop a community action plan to address a pressing community need.

  • In Phase 2 (months 7 to 12), partners will implement the action plan and measure its impact within the community. Phase 2 funding will be conditional upon a Centre review of the action plan to assess its evidence base, feasibility, sustainability and potential impact within the identified community and beyond.

Throughout the twelve-month award term, the Centre will work closely with the community partners providing support and tools for success, including a community mobilization workshop at the beginning of the award term, assistance with evaluation and knowledge exchange and other consultation as needed. The Centre will maintain regular communication with all funded communities and will require regular updates on the status of funded projects.

Communities considering applying for this grant are required to consult with the Centre prior to submitting an application. This is required in order to assess the community’s readiness and for assistance with application preparation. Those interested should contact the Centre at grantsandawards@cheo.on.ca to receive further information on this process.

Value of the Award

Up to $15,000 in each of two phases, for a maximum total of $30,000. In addition, successful communities may apply for a one-year renewal of up to $20,000 in funding. This will be contingent on the availability of funds and the Centre’s contract renewal beyond March 31, 2010.

Eligibility Criteria

All Community Mobilization Award applications must meet the following criteria and conditions to be considered for funding:

  1. The proposal must meet all of the overarching criteria and conditions for Centre funding.

  2. The proposed community mobilization activities must be of direct relevance to child and youth (0-18 years of age) mental health in the province of Ontario.

  3. Applications for Community Mobilization Awards must include at least two agencies that have committed to working together on the project or activity. Exceptions may be made in northern and remote communities where a single organization may be responsible for several programs and services.

  4. Partners should be clearly identified and must include representatives from all relevant stakeholder groups with an interest in the identified issue, including youth, parents and/or caregivers. Cross-disciplinary and/or cross-sectoral collaboration must be represented in the list of partners.

  5. Proposed budget items must be consistent with the list of eligible expenses and consistent with the overall goal of Community Mobilization Awards. Eligible budget items include: partner and community meeting costs, travel expenses directly related to the mobilization project, personnel costs for project coordination, administration expenses (up to a maximum of 10% of the total award), and justified consultation fees. Materials and minor equipment may also be purchased provided they are required to accomplish the activities included in the proposed project plan.

  6. These funds are not intended to cover costs available through other funding streams supported by the Centre (ie. research grants, training awards or program evaluation funding).

  7. In addition, applicants must participate in a consultation with the Centre prior to submitting their proposals. This process will allow the applicant to demonstrate the community’s readiness and to receive the necessary supports from the Centre in preparing an application.
